Our Engagement Story
Sunday, 9/28/08
- After lunch Ryan and I went down to Bloomington and stopped at Bell Trace, so he could meet my grandmothers.
- Went back to my parents house, chatted with my mom, and then when on a "hill intense" run (to train for the hilly hundred bike ride).
- Came back, showered, and then the four of us (Ryan, Kate, and her parents) sat out on the back porch...
- Ryan told my parents that he was sure he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me, but wanted their blessing, before he moved forward.
- They gave it under four conditions: 1 - I meet his parents, 2 - He meets Katie Matson (my mom's best friend, and a "good judge of character"), 3 - He agrees to sing Karaoke at the Office Lounge, 4 - He tries to fix this garden hose reel, which they bought and couldn't figure out
- Ryan agrees and there is much hugging
- The cackle club (my mom's friends) then proceed to walk out singing the wedding march, carrying a vase of white lilies
- Peter and Bruce (the granddog) arrive later for dinner and also give their blessing
Thursday, 10/9/08
- Kate is frantically getting ready to head out to Annapolis for her high school friend Sage's wedding - packing, sub plans, cross-country care package, etc.
- Kate burns the pizza, while she waits for Ryan to come over (He was out doing fieldwork all day)
- At the end of dinner I apologetically cry, "Ryan, I'm sorry. I promise it won't always be this crazy."
- Ryan comes across the table and gets down on one knee, "Kate, I hope everyday is this crazy with you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you." He proceeds to take out my great-grandmother Amee's ring (who I'm named after) and proposes to me.
- I accept - much celebration!
- Ryan picks me up from the airport. He takes me out for a "surprise dinner"... at the Eagle's Nest to celebrate our engagement.
- We return to his apartment downtown for a celebratory mustache shaving session!
